Pontlottyn |
On Friday last, a well known and respected inhabitant of Pontlottyn passed away in the person of Mr. W.Williams (Gwilym Craig y Tyle). The deceased was born in an old farm house near the spot where the Rhymney Bute Blast Furnace now stands, in the year 1825, and was therefore 66 years of age. He was possessed of a good share of intelligence, which induced him when quite a young man to open a night-school at which several of our public men received their first training for a public life of usefulness. He was also a bard of no mean powers. We believe his work entitled "Rhyfel" which appeared recently in the Merthyr Express, will be sufficient proof for such assertion. Mr.Williams was a true and enlightened Liberal of the advanced type, and acted as Treasurer for the Pontlottyn division of East Glamorgan. His loss will be greatly felt, not least by his 2 daughters, but also by the whole church worshipping at Zoar, where he fulfilled the office of secretary for the last quarter of a century, and also the office of deacon and Sunday School teacher to the end of his days. His mortal remains were interred at Bargoed Baptist burial ground on Tuesday, the 5th inst. when his friend and pastor (Rev. Dr. Williams) and others officiated. |
